The picture on the left is an illusion picture. It takes advantage of the difference between central and peripheral vision - the rods and cones - and your inability to have the rods distinguish some colors with any clarity. The eye and brain see them but there is so much grey that grey overloads and the eye kinda averages them out. Just stare at the black dot and you'll see what I mean.
